AIM members featured in The Dolls House Magazine

The November 2014 Issue of The Dolls' House Magazine features not one but five AIM artisans. Marianne Cook, Janet Granger, Diane Gregory, Frances Powell and Sally Watson all feature in the glossy pages of the latest edition (Issue 198) I'm sure all of our readers will join me in saying a proud
"Well done to you all".

One of those members, Marianne Cooke is a painter who makes miniature plants and flowers mostly in 1/12th scale. Her aim is to make them look as if they were growing in, or had just been gathered from her own garden, which means they are definitely not florist-perfect! Marianne may add a little crack or moss to the pots, and sometimes they even have a weed growing alongside them. Some flowers may be overblown or still in bud and a leaf or three may be blemished which  adds to their uniqueness and delight.

Marianne's contribution to The Dolls House Magazine is a project to make a Sumac tree in 1/12th scale (with brief additional instructions detailing how to adapt it for 1/24th). This colourful addition would be perfect for your autumn miniature garden or in a pot beside the front door. Marianne tells us that it is the first of a number of projects to be included in future issues of the magazine. If you love plants and flowers but are not so keen on hand making them yourself, why not visit Marianne's website or her Etsy shop for many delightful flowers and plants all ready to be placed in your miniature garden.

Beautiful Flowers by Marianne Cooke

AIM Member, Marianne Cooke recently showed us her wonderful new set of flowers and told us about the inspiration behind this fabulous little set of flowers.

"I recently bought a little collection of Victorian style floral containers made by Spanish artisan Nieves PalacĂn in my favourite blue and white colourway - perfect for a traditional or a shabby chic modern home. I decided to keep to the blue and white theme and filled each with a different white flower: open, old-roses and fresh daisies for the two jugs, French lavender, begonias and tulips for the variously sized oval pots. They were great fun to make."

I'm sure you will agree that they are lovely and they are currently for sale through Marianne's Etsy shop.

A Pot of Wall Flowers by Marianne Cook

Today AIM member Marianne Cook tells us about her latest handmade miniature delight....

"One flower that I really love and have been wanting to make for ages is the wallflower and recently I devoted a while to working out a way to make one. It involved painting the tissue paper, punching out flower shapes and then adding shading to each individual blossom.

After that was complete, I had to make the tiny buds which cluster around the top of each stem. Each stem has leaves growing all the way up; these needed to be cut and punched from painted paper. Then the was a lot of wire and glue!

And finally, a micro tip pen to indicate the stamens in each flower head!

This is the finished result....

I'll leave you to decide if I managed to achieve the realistic effect aimed at!"

AIM Members News 2012 ~ Flower and Plants by Marianne Cook

12th Scale Lenten Rose

Fancy a lovely little pot of flowers for your miniature scene?

Then pop over to Marianne's Etsy Store and marvel at all her beautiful creations.
Marianne reproduces the plants and flowers that she sees in gardens into 12th scale.

Marianne tells us that she prefers generally to make this sort of flower and plant, rather than perfect florist blooms, aiming to make them to look as if they are growing or have just been cut. The pot may be cracked or mossy and even have a weed growing alongside it... Some flowers may be overblown, or not yet open... A leaf or two may be blemished... and so on.

Plants and flowers can be bought from her website or from her Etsy shop, 'Marianne26', and as special commissions. She also occasionally sells tiny framed pictures made in the same way as the real-life-size paintings, and miniature needlepoint/tapestry pieces.

Dear Reader,

It is once again my privilege to welcome you to
the October edition of the ground breaking AIM Magazine.  This month AIM members have chosen to celebrate a very special lady in our lives; Granny!

For me the rhythmical ticking of a cuckoo clock, 'gold top' milk, sherbet lemon sweets and the comforting smell of a dinner roasting in the oven all bring back an ocean of wonderful memories of my much loved Nanna...

In the miniature world our shared nostalgia for past times and our treasured recollections of days gone by often in turn become our silent muse, inspiring the miniatures which we love to collect or make.

In the modern minature world, scenes, settings and locations from our past are fast becoming a popular starting point for our new miniature projects.  Indeed it seems that for many, submersing ourselves in the miniature world allows us to create tangible recreations of our own personal memories.

Since the birth of the internet there has been an ever increasing interest in genealogy and researching our personal family tree is now common place.  For those of us in the miniature world there is also an obvious cross over between our nostalgic memories and discoveries of our own personal past and our (enviable) ability to recreate them in three dimensional form in the present.

I personally am no exception to this kind of inspiration as I have recently been working on small scale kits which reflect furniture or homes which were present in my own personal childhood.  So if you are considering recreating 'Granny's house' you need look no further!!  AIM members have filled the pages of this issue with myriad ideas, inspiration and countless projects that just might help you bring your own memories back to life!

A Note from the Editor - The AIM Magazine April 2011

AIM Editor Bea Broadwood
 Dear Reader,

In 1981, when a certain prince’s mother walked down the aisle of St. Paul’s Cathedral, despite being only nine, I sat for the duration of that historic royal wedding with my nose twelve inches from the television screen, utterly mesmerised. So you can imagine my excitement when the news was announced that there was to be another royal wedding and it seems I was not alone!

In the weeks leading up to this April issue, AIM members have also been captivated by the sense of anticipation and excitement that has been generated by the imminent Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, due to be held later this month.

However, as with any professional media publication the themes which the AIM magazine’s issues are built around, are voted upon and intricately planned months in advance, but, from time to time the real world interrupts the harmonious ebb and flow of the world of miniatures and when it does it is fun to respond. Therefore, as we are a ‘real’ time publication, the AIM editorial team decided that we must ‘seize the mood of the moment’ and transform our April issue into a veritable celebration of the forthcoming royal nuptials.
So this month the AIM imag is ‘a tale of two halves’ as alongside our Royal Wedding inspired features, we also take a closer look at ‘add on’ or additional rooms of the home. From the history of conservatories to the quiet solitude of the humble out door loo, AIM members have provided articles, features and projects, which we hope will inspire you.

Our ‘Royal Wedding’ pages are packed with AIM member’s miniature interpretations and predictions for the big day. So much so that I think it is fair to say that it seems deep down everyone loves a ‘love story’ and everyone loves a good wedding! Combine that wedding with the ‘fairytale’ element and it leaves the hopeless romantics amongst us collectively reaching for the union jack bunting.

So…Where will I be on the 29th?

The same place I was in 1981: twelve inches from the television screen, armed with a full box of tissues, quietly surrounded by copious amounts of union jack bunting.

At any age, I do love a good wedding!

Meet our Members - Jacqui Perrat

“Jax" has been making trees for around 30 years, although mostly for the railway hobby.  She has taught modelmaking at a Further Education College as well as numerous different workshops at shows and clubs over many years.  Clubs are welcome to contact us if they are considering a workshop.
In the 90’s she wrote for a couple of the Dollshouse Magazines on an occasional basis, although offered a regular column she was still in full time employment teaching in the NHS at the time.
Each tree is unique since it is impossible to make two the same, although similar can be done. Sometimes research is required before carrying out a commission in order to make the tree as lifelike as possible when it is a species that has not previously been made.  Each tree is handsculpted over a wire frame, and sometimes the painting can take as long as making the skeleton.  Trees can be impressionistic with foam foliage, or made with individual leaves, sometimes paper and sometimes clay.
In addition to being used for dollshouses, wargaming and railway layouts, Ceynix trees have been used by fashion designer Paul Smith as a Christmas window dressing in his Covent Garden shop, they have been used by and appeared on BBC TV and various local TV stations.  They have also been used on a film set or two as well as museum dioramas.
The tiny railway sets in scale 1/900 are available as a basic set, or with scenery already applied.  An acrylic cover is also available to keep them dust and damage free although if you are putting your own scenery on it is best to do these before deciding on the size of cover required.”

Meet our Members - Shelly Norris

My name is Shelly Norris, I live in gorgeous Colorado, we are self employed and breed paint race horses.   I have been dabbling in the miniature world for the past 10 years or so, of course, I have a large hand made dollhouse that sits waiting patiently for me to work on but I am too busy jumping from one part of the hobby to another!  I have written several how to articles for both the US based and the English based miniature magazines.  These articles have been from micro minis to 1" scale.  But, I always come back to flowers!  Ah, I love gardens and flowers and vines and hidey holes to sit and enjoy those flowers plants and trees! My flowers are created by different means, meaning, I use paper, air dry porcelain and wire and glue!  The creation of my flowers involves many different techniques.  I teach classes using the wire and glue to create flowers.  A huge Thank you needs to be mentioned to Patricia Snyder the creator of this method and for allowing me to teach her method not her flowers.  My favorite paper flowers so far have been my Rose Vines and I am loving my Wisteria vines created with paper... my favorite wire and glue flowers have to be the Iris and my Wisteria....

Other items of interest:  Several years ago I purchased the copyright from Viola for her booklet series.  I still sell these.  Most of them have been re written and I can now send them out as pdf files for immediate use.  I also have a Quarter scale booklet for sale in pdf form.  I am working on going as green as possible!

The one thing that I have always wanted to accomplish is a hand sculpted doll that looks good, not awesome, good, that is the one thing that I have NOT been able to accomplish.

As a note of interest, besides my own website a couple of years ago I started the Miniatures Only Auction site.  This site is for the auctioning of Dollhouse Miniatures scaled 1" and smaller including supplies!  In the last few months the site has really taken off.

The neat thing about the site is that if you are listing a regular auction style listing it is FREE to list.

Meet our Members - Daisy Carpi

At nine I went to school to learn how to paint oil paintings.
I then attended the University of Visual Arts, and learned to tinker with various techniques.
In 2002 I started making miniature porcelain cold initially.  Also in 2002, I joined a group here in Brazil and learned to make plans on paper. Later, I got the furniture with wood or cardboard and tissue paper. That turned into doing many other miniatures.
Now, I have been making polymer clay food, always trying to learn how to improve more.

Meet our Members - Lesley's Gardens

Lesley's Gardens
by Lesley Shepherd
I'm a garden designer and educator and began making miniature plants to illustrate gardening principles to my design and horticulture students.  The miniature containers and gardens were popular as gifts for shut ins or friends who were gardeners. Eventually I combined my experience with scale miniatures to produce accurately detailed plants and simplified plant kits for people who wanted to create special gardens or conservatory plantings for their miniature scenes in scales of 1:12, 1:24 and 1:48th, with occasional commissions in 1:6.

My background in design means I often work with historical recreations, and I use my knowledge to create miniature plantings that accurately reflect seasons and historical periods.  I pride myself on producing miniature plants which can be identified as individual named and historic varieties, with accurate leaf, petal and often stamen details.  All of my miniature plants transmit light through their petals and leaves the same way their living counterparts do, with parts in the closest possible scales to the originals, both in thickness and size. I'm happiest creating gardens or planted containers, but as a trained florist I often use my skills to create various period floral displays in my own containers as well as those of other artisans.

A background in museum work means I make all of my plants with wire, artist's papers, watercolors and acrylics, and archival glues that are suited to long term display and storage.  I produce my own line of stoneware and some resin pots for miniature plants in the scales of 1:12, 1:24 and 1:48. These are based on planters that are either historic, or currently available to the horticultural trade in the sizes I reproduce accurately in miniature scales.  The larger 1:12 stoneware planters can be used to grown tiny bonsai or other dwarfed living plants.

In recent years I've begun to offer simple plant kits of coloured paper parts, as well as laser kits of parts designed to be custom coloured by miniaturists to suit their particular garden style.  I enjoy teaching classes on making miniature plants and the line of kits has developed in response to requests from students who love the accurate colours and growth they can reproduce in miniature.

In my 'other' miniature career I write the miniatures site at  http://miniatures.about.com for About.com Inc. a division of the New York Times. I've also written several articles on making miniature plants for past issues of The Doll's House Magazine.

You can see my work at local fairs in the Pacific Northwest of North America, or at the Kensington Dolls House Festival.

Meet our Members

Crown Jewel Miniatures
by Robin Brady-Boxwell

My name is Robin Brady-Boxwell and I've been designing and creating one inch scale dollhouse miniatures since 1979.  My passion as a miniaturist began when my fahter and I began constructing a dollhouse from a kit in the basement of our home and my interest continues to grow with each passing year.

Several years ago my talents as a miniatuirst were noticed by the owner of a local dollhouse shop, and before I knew it I was selling my miniatures through Dollhouses Plus, Stratford CT.  As an artist, I found I could not limit myself to one speciality, and I created everything from miniature food to plants, furniture and jewelry.  My interest in creating realistic miniature room settings led to my hire at the store and I became the chief consultant for dollhouse interior design.  Soon I was helping customers coordinate wallpaper, tiles, molding, wood, lighting, furniture, textiles and other various architectural elements to achieve their miniature dreams.

While I still love interior design in miniature, I've discovered a passion for accessorizing miniature furniture.  I've 'loaded' everything from china cabinets, to tables, to sewing machines, giving the illusion that 'someone was there'.

I loved every aspect of my job and went to all the trade shows but meeting fellow miniaturists and artisans was the most rewarding experience of all.  Random people would pop into the shop with their minis, sharing techniques, asking for advice and selling some of the most incredible things and I knew beyond a doubt that I was in my element.  The explosion of internet commerce changed everything almost overnight and I watched in sadness as most of the dollhouse shops in New England closed - including the one I was working in.  It was a sad time but as one door closes, another opens and armed with experience and and endless resource of creativity, I decided to open my own business online.

This door opened the door between me, collectors and artisans from all over the world!

In March of 2010, I began Crown Jewel Miniatures, and my constantly evolving range of miniature creations are now sold online through eBay and Etsy.

(Private commissions take up the majority of  my time and are always welcome!)

If you have any questions  or would like to learn more about my miniature creations, please contact me at the following address:
