Introducing AIM member Glen Anderson whose interest in miniatures goes back to his childhood, when he built model kits. As an adult, he had an interest in building furniture, but no room for a workshop, and so miniatures were a natural fit! After working on pieces as a hobby for several years, Keenderson Miniatures was formed in 2008.

Glen uses traditional cabinetry techniques to create miniature furniture and accessories. In the past, he has been inspired by Federal, Art Deco, Arts and Crafts and Modern Design, but it is the challenge of working in scale that always draws him forward to new projects.

Joy sculpts and then dresses 12th scale character dolls which are sure to bring a little humour to your scene and guaranteed to bring you a smile :)

Joy sculpts older folk, children, wizards, witches and custom requested dolls. AIM Members News 2012 ~ Malcolms Miniatures

New from Malcolm’s Miniatures – PICflicker flickering light unit.

The unit has four channels that provide independent, random flickering effects. Each channel can be set to either fire or candle mode. Fire mode gives a pulsating flame effect. Candle mode has a flickering effect with occasional pulses. The flicker rate can be adjusted. Each channel is rated at 1A (equivalent to about 20 small bulbs), overall rating for the unit is 2A (40 small bulbs).

AIM News 2012 ~ AIM imag update

It has been brought to our attention via comments left on previous posts, that some people are disappointed in the fact that the AIM imag is not currently being published online monthly and that there is some confusion as to when new issues are coming out. May we take this opportunity to remind our faithful followers that we are working hard behind the scenes to bring you new issues of the imag, but this is done in our own time, on a voluntary basis and around our own personal, lives, jobs, etc. Every page in every issue of the AIM imag is planned and edited. Every article is planned, the item is made, then photographed, accompanying text written, then it is uploaded to the Editing Team who format, edit and then apply it to the magazine template. This is turn is then edited before a final check that it all looking lovely and then the online uploading to publish begins. Again, this is all done by the AIM members who kindly give their time for no payment, to bring you what is a wonderful, informative and packed imag and Christmas Advent Calendar.

Sometimes, life can interrupt this freely given time and the AIM imag is then put on hold until we are happy that we can provide a new issue of the AIM imag that will be a pleasure to read for our loyal readers.

Itching for Spring?

If you're itching for warmer weather, how about doing some spring stitching? The crocus pillow above is the newest addition to Melissa's website and coordinates with the hollyhock pillow. Both cushions are done on 40 count silk gauze and are designed for DMC cotton floss.

The "Birds and Blossoms" cushion is the spring cushion from her Four Seasons Series. The Four Seasons cushions are done on 48 count gauze and each has a plaid border, and an optional stitched plaid back. (If you live in the southern hemisphere, and are tired of the hot weather, you might like to try the autumn pillow in this series.)

There are many other projects on the website, such as a peony rug if you're looking for more spring flowers, a cheery yellow tea cozy suitable for a 1950s kitchen and much more....

Introducing AIM Member, Alberto Gozzi of A.E.G. Miniatures, who started building miniatures in 1996. Alberto explains that he has always had an interest in architecture and worked for many years with his father as a carpenter in Italy. Alberto stumbled on the miniature hobby by chance one day whilst walking down the street and thought this would be a great way to express his interest in architecture. So far, Alberto has built several large houses and a few room boxes but would really enjoy building some smaller houses. He currently works in 1:12 scale which Alberto admit is his favorite scale.

Janet Granger has just launched a new miniature needlepoint carpet kit on her website, www.janetgranger.co.uk , called 'Saskia'.

The design is an Oriental one, in shades of mid-blue with deep red and cream highlights, and measures 9 x 6 1/4 inches. It would look great in a study or drawing room in your doll's house. The kit contains 18 count canvas, plenty of Appleton's crewel wool, thread for the fringe, detailed instructions, a colour-block chart to count the design from, and a suitable needle. The design is worked in needlepoint - tent stitch for the details and basketweave for the background. Both stitches are easy to do (very similar to half cross stitch). There are Tutorials on Janet's website, showing how to do these stitches, if you are new to embroidery. If you prefer to choose your own colours, or work the design on a different count of fabric, then a chart pack is also available. The full kit costs £21.50, and the chart pack costs £10.75. P&P is free if ordered online, or £1.50 if ordered by post with a cheque.

As a miniature doll artist I usually make lovely women dressed in historical costumes. Then a valued customer asked me to make her a Dr. Frankenstein based on Vincent Price and his helper based on Peter Lorre. I don't do "custom" dolls but I agreed to for her. That resulted in a passion for making "creepy people" and it was so much fun that I went onto to make a Vampire couple, some witches, a Zombie, a Ghost couple, and various body parts. The Vampire couple and Dr. Frankenstein vignette have sold but can be viewed on my website.

I still have several creepy people bouncing around in my head but for now, I am back to making beautiful young ladies so they will have to wait until next Halloween to be set free.

Introducing Helena Bleeker, a master at miniature knitting. In the above photo, Helena shares with us "Bella" and a lovely teddy bear made and dressed by a dear friend of hers in Belgium.

The "Connie" and “Bella” pattern above was knitted using the new Bio certified cotton from Venne Holland. Helena tells us that the thickness of the cotton is Nm 50/2 which places it exactly between the 34/2 and 70/2. This new thread knits up beautifully and shows the pattern in great detail. Helena stocks the full colour range available at the moment and the colour chart is now shown on her web site, which also shows the full range of Miniature Knitting patterns in 1/12 and 1/24 scale plus miniature knitting needles and threads. All the threads can be used for crochet and lace making as well, so why not pay Helena a visit at her website;

Janet has just launched new twelfth scale needlepoint kits on her website, www.janetgranger.co.uk , so why not take a look? Both ranges are called 'Alice' - there is a minty green/beige colourway, and a blue/peach colourway to choose from. Each range comprises nine kits altogether. They can all be bought individually, but the photos below show them together, to tempt you!! The basic 'Alice' design is derived from a Victorian floral motif, but these soft furnishings would look great in a 'shabby chic' interior, too. For those of you who want to know these things, the design is called ‘Alice’, after a friend of Janet's who lives in Edinburgh!

The design is available in all these different types of kit: two sizes of carpet, cushion, round footstool, rectangular stool, dining chair, firescreen, bellpull and bolster cushion. The carpets are to be stitched on 18 count interlock canvas with Appleton’s crewel wool (chart packs are also available, if you’d prefer to make them in a different colourway or a different count of fabric). The cushion is to be stitched on 22 count canvas with two strands of Anchor stranded cotton. All the other kits are to be stitched on 32 count silk gauze, with one strand of Anchor.

Prices start at 4.50 GBP for the cushion kit, up to 21.50 GBP for the large carpet kit. Shipping is free, worldwide, on any order of 10 GBP or over. Under 10 GBP, a flat rate of 1.25 GBP per order applies.

Suzane Herget has been interested in miniatures since a young age and has subsequently hand made miniature accessories for her daughters dolls house. In 1981, Suzanne was taught how to hand make Tatting and in 2007 she applied for and was awarded IGMA status. Around 2008, having moved to quarter scale, Suzane started to move into the area of doll making and made a series of dolls for an Anniversary Inn. Her Eliza Doolittle and friends seen above were some of her first creations and continue to be among her favorites.

AIM Member Showcase ~ K J Dolls Houses

Kevin Jackson has been making unique miniature Tudor dollhouses for over 2 years. What started out as a hobby has turned into a full-time occupation since he recently retired from building real houses at exhibitions; something he had done for 20 years.

No two houses are ever the same, as Kevin doesn’t follow any plans and the design of each house evolves as he works. Each 12^th scale house takes approximately 4-5 weeks to complete and costs anything from £750.00 to £3000.00 plus. To see some of the houses he has made visit www.kjdollshouses.co.uk.

The attention to detail and use of good quality materials makes these collector’s houses much sought after. All the wood for the beams, posts, floor boards, bargeboards and brackets is solid timber as the grain of real wood gives a more realistic, yet miniature, finish. The wood is then wire brushed to bring the grain of the timber out, the edges are then carefully distressed to give an aged appearance, before receiving at least 3 coats of stain.

The leaded windows are handmade with a special finish on the ‘glass effect’ which gives it a textured relief when touched from the outside, just as Tudor glass would have looked. The windows come complete with internal ironmongery which is also handmade.

To duplicate how Tudor timber frame houses were originally jointed together, the outside of the houses feature individually cut, drilled and fixed timber pegs, in the positions where the structural joints would occur. On average this results in 100-130 separate pegs being fitted to every house.

The internal floor boards are all handmade and then laid one at a time. To add a realistic touch, each one has joints carefully cut into them, complete with nail holes on both sides of the joint. All the ‘heavy oak effect’ doors are handmade and have a full set of handmade authentic looking dummy hinges and twisted metal pull ring handles.

All houses come fully lit with handmade lights. The roofs, paving and chimneys are plastered and sculpted by hand, all of which are then painted and treated with matt varnish to protect the finish.

Kevin is always happy to discuss customer’s specific requirements before taking the order, to ensure that they are getting the house of their dreams.

Dear Reader,

It is once again my privilege to welcome you to the October edition of the ground breaking AIM Magazine. This month AIM members have chosen to celebrate a very special lady in our lives; Granny!

For me the rhythmical ticking of a cuckoo clock, 'gold top' milk, sherbet lemon sweets and the comforting smell of a dinner roasting in the oven all bring back an ocean of wonderful memories of my much loved Nanna...

In the miniature world our shared nostalgia for past times and our treasured recollections of days gone by often in turn become our silent muse, inspiring the miniatures which we love to collect or make.

In the modern minature world, scenes, settings and locations from our past are fast becoming a popular starting point for our new miniature projects. Indeed it seems that for many, submersing ourselves in the miniature world allows us to create tangible recreations of our own personal memories.

Since the birth of the internet there has been an ever increasing interest in genealogy and researching our personal family tree is now common place. For those of us in the miniature world there is also an obvious cross over between our nostalgic memories and discoveries of our own personal past and our (enviable) ability to recreate them in three dimensional form in the present.

I personally am no exception to this kind of inspiration as I have recently been working on small scale kits which reflect furniture or homes which were present in my own personal childhood. So if you are considering recreating 'Granny's house' you need look no further!! AIM members have filled the pages of this issue with myriad ideas, inspiration and countless projects that just might help you bring your own memories back to life!

Dear Reader,

As the year continues to fly by, it is once again my pleasure to introduce the August issue of the world famous FREE AIM imag!

This month AIM members have been looking forward, (rather than backwards into the past) for inspiration for their miniature creations and they have come together to celebrate the 'modern miniature world'...

Until fairly recently the miniature world mostly reflected times gone by and past historical periods. However, it has become more and more evident that there is a new genre of miniatures, an ever growing interest in creating modern dolls houses and filling their interiors with miniatures which are inspired by current trends and fashions.

Indeed many younger miniaturists (aka our 'next generation' of artisans and collectors) instead seem to prefer to focus on architectural styles or designs which are evident in the 'full size' world we live in today.

So with this in mind, this month AIM members have taken a closer look at this emerging area of the miniature world and as you will see there is simply no reason why your dolls house has to reflect times gone by... instead it can be as 'on trend' and modern as you dare!

Here in AIM's virtual global office, all is now quiet...

Overheated laptops have been switched off, bulging notepads have been closed and flattened desk chair cushions have been plumped. In short there has been an audible (collective) sigh rippling quietly across four continents and countless time zones as the hardworking editorial team members finally step away from their desks and look forward to a well earned summer break!

However, with the editorial team disappearing into the sunset, there is no need to panic!!

In order to cover the editorial team's need for their annual holidays, 'stay-cations', rehab visits or private time in a darkened room, rest assured that before clocking off and supported by the talented members of AIM they have pulled out all the stops to put together this fantastic 'summer' edition of the AIM magazine, which we hope will tide you all over until the next issue of the AIM imag is released on the 1st August!!

So in the meantime, and is now customary, as editor it is once again my privilege to welcome you all to the 35th edition of the AIM Magazine, which as you will see is packed full of exciting projects, articles and not forgetting all your favourite regular columns and features too - and of course all for FREE!

Dear Reader,

In 1981, when a certain prince’s mother walked down the aisle of St. Paul’s Cathedral, despite being only nine, I sat for the duration of that historic royal wedding with my nose twelve inches from the television screen, utterly mesmerised. So you can imagine my excitement when the news was announced that there was to be another royal wedding and it seems I was not alone!

In the weeks leading up to this April issue, AIM members have also been captivated by the sense of anticipation and excitement that has been generated by the imminent Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, due to be held later this month.

However, as with any professional media publication the themes which the AIM magazine’s issues are built around, are voted upon and intricately planned months in advance, but, from time to time the real world interrupts the harmonious ebb and flow of the world of miniatures and when it does it is fun to respond. Therefore, as we are a ‘real’ time publication, the AIM editorial team decided that we must ‘seize the mood of the moment’ and transform our April issue into a veritable celebration of the forthcoming royal nuptials.

So this month the AIM imag is ‘a tale of two halves’ as alongside our Royal Wedding inspired features, we also take a closer look at ‘add on’ or additional rooms of the home. From the history of conservatories to the quiet solitude of the humble out door loo, AIM members have provided articles, features and projects, which we hope will inspire you.

Our ‘Royal Wedding’ pages are packed with AIM member’s miniature interpretations and predictions for the big day. So much so that I think it is fair to say that it seems deep down everyone loves a ‘love story’ and everyone loves a good wedding! Combine that wedding with the ‘fairytale’ element and it leaves the hopeless romantics amongst us collectively reaching for the union jack bunting.

So…Where will I be on the 29th?

The same place I was in 1981: twelve inches from the television screen, armed with a full box of tissues, quietly surrounded by copious amounts of union jack bunting.

At any age, I do love a good wedding!

Count Your Blessings from Janet Granger

This is Janet Granger's latest addition to her range of mini samplers. It is called 'Count Your Blessings', and is to be worked on 32 count evenweave fabric. The kit contains everything you need to complete the sampler, including the wooden picture frame to mount the finished stitching in. We often take for granted what we have. However much we DO have in the way of ‘stuff’, we always seem to want something more. And in the affluent West of the 21st Century, there seems to be a huge range of products ready to tempt us to buy more, when it may be that things you can’t buy, such as friendship, is really more important. In Victorian times, young girls were taught to value what they had (however little that might be), by stitching a phrase such as ‘Count your blessings’ as a sampler motto. Imagine how it would be drilled into your brain, if you had to painstakingly stitch this for months, gradually building up the words and motifs, when you were maybe as young as six, as many schoolchildren were when they were instructed to make samplers such as this!
